Personal Details Of 75,000 People On Stolen Bord Gáis Laptops

You’ve probably already heard the news from yesterday evening about the theft of four laptops from the offices of Bord Gáis in Dublin. If not, a burglary took place on Friday 5th June at Bord Gáis offices in Dublin where the laptops had been stolen.  It has been confirmed that account numbers and personal details of 75,000 customers had been held on the laptops.

13 Laptops Stolen From Belfast Civil Service

At the end of last month a break-in at Royston House in Belfast, the Department of Finance and Personnel, resulted in 13 laptops being stolen. Some of the laptops contained personal information including employee names, addresses, National Insurance Numbers, date of births and even bank account numbers.

There’s an interesting story that states that 9,000 USB sticks are lost in laundrettes every year in the UK. The story also says that London taxi drivers claim that over 12,000 portable devices are left in their cabs every year. More Laptops And Data Go Missing

There is yet another report of a laptop going missing with sensitive data on it. A laptop was stolen from the home of a HSE employee. Recent reports include the Bank of Ireland and other HSE incidents where personal data of their customers has been compromised. This damages the reputation of these organisations, their credibility when it comes to security, gets the Data Protection Commissioner very interested in their operations and damages their customers.
