Virtual Servers

Machine virtualisation allows many separate machine instances to run on a single piece of hardware. Each has its own memory, storage, CPU allocation and operating system. In every sense they are individual secure entities. A virtual machine runs on and consumes the resources of a physical host computer.

Virtual machines are intended to be used for less resource intensive machines. This includes the majority of servers that are deployed for online applications.

C Infinity launched its virtualisation solution to allow:

  • More machines per rack: to reduce the physical cost of hosting machines.
  • Reduce power consumption: this reduces the carbon footprint and reduces costs.
  • Increase flexibility: virtual machines are abstracted from the underlying physical hardware, making them mobile and less reliant on that hardware.
  • Fault tolerant: by clustering the physical hosts, each virtual machine is made hardware fault tolerant, i.e. if a host fails, the virtual machine is automatically relocated and restarted.

C Infinity has chosen to use Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Hyper-V as its virtualisation solution. Hyper-V was chosen because of reduced costs, flexibility and its ability to be managed like no other virtualisation solution.

Each C Infinity client that deploys a virtual machine will be able to take advantage of the reduced costs and increased flexibility and fault tolerance. Unlike some, we see virtualisation as a strategic enterprise level solution and we manage it as such. Not all machines should be virtual and we will work with customers on the decision making process. All virtual machines are managed just like our physical machines. They are subject to the same levels of security and pro-active management.
