New Microsoft SQL Server Migration Assistant

Microsoft has announced the release of a new tool to assist developers to migrate from MySQL to Microsoft SQL 2005 and SQL 2008.  The current release is a Customer Technical Preview (CTP) which is a very early testing version, not usually to be used in production.

This will be very interesting to those companies that are eligible for WebsiteSpark and who are currently using LAMP web servers with a MySQL back end.  WebsiteSpark is the program in which small website development companies (often hosting those sites) can gain free usage of Microsoft Windows Web Server 2008 R2 and SQL 2008 Web Edition via approved Microsoft WebsiteSpark hosting partners, such as C Infinity.

Migrating from MySQL and a LAMP stack would have been very difficult.  With the Web Platform Installer, installing PHP on Windows has never been easier.  IIS 7.5 is easy to configure and has a rich library of free extensions from Microsoft.  With the migration toolkit you’ll be able to make that final leap and switch from MySQL to a supported installation of Microsoft SQL.

The migration tool from Microsoft is available for download now and a finished version should be released in Summer 2010.

Please contact C Infinity if you are interested in learning more about WebsiteSpark and our private cloud, dedicated server hosting services.
