Ireland’s small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are exposed to increasingly high risks due to inadequate and unreliable backup of computer data. This was stated by Caitríona Lynch, managing director of C Infinity at the launch of LiveVault, a secure online backup and recovery solution aimed specifically at SMEs.
“Many SMEs are relying on tape as back up to their critical computer data. Yet research* shows that 77% of firms were unable to fully recover data using traditional methods,”
commented Caitríona Lynch. She said that up to 50% of businesses that lose data in a disaster go out of business.
“The fact is that today it is not just fire or flood that can cause catastrophic loss of data but human error, viruses, corrupt files or hardware failure can put any firm out of business in an instant.”
As an example of human error she pointed to the recent Revenue fiasco in the UK when an entire child benefits database of 25 million was lost, allegedly due to a breach of procedures by a junior official. “It is not enough, however, to backup data. Even business data that’s being backed up and stored must be secured from outside threats. Encrypted online backup addresses both of these issues in one solution.”
In launching LiveVault, Ms Lynch said that remote backup got over the major problems associated with tape backup. “Unfortunately tape is often unreliable, can be complex, time consuming and difficult to do daily and is not live so that the most urgent files you are working on are the most vulnerable.” With LiveVault from C Infinity the business owner can simply ‘set & forget’ as the backup is conducted in a live and secure online environment without the need for staff intervention.
