Irish SMEs Advised Back Up Your Data

Small and medium-sized firms in Ireland are leaving themselves open to security risks by not backing up their data properly, says Caitríona Lynch, managing director of data backup and storage firm, C Infinity.

Lynch says the recent loss of sensitive data by the UK Government highlights the need for companies to go beyond basic data backup because human error can still negate these precautions.

“The fact is that today it is not just fire or flood that can cause catastrophic loss of data but human error, viruses, corrupt files or hardware failure can put any firm out of business in an instant.”

While online backup, remote storage and disaster recovery programmes should feature in the IT policy of all SMEs, Lynch claims that many are still relying on tape as backup to their critical computer data.

Yet research shows that 77pc of firms were unable to fully recover data using traditional methods,” added Lynch.

esearch from Storage Magazine indicates that 50pc of businesses that

“Even business data that’s being backed up and stored must be secured from outside threats. Encrypted online backup addresses both of these issues in one solution.”

C Infinity says its new LiveVault service, aimed at SMEs, lets users ‘set & forget’ so that data backup can be managed online without the need for staff intervention, which should reduce the risk of human error.
