Less than 30% of Irish companies able to restore data from backups! I saw a very interesting piece in the Business supplement in the Irish Times on Friday which said that “many Irish companies are leaving themselves open to disruption or lost revenue due to poor disaster –recovery techniques”.
This study of 117 Irish companies found (quite surprisingly for me) that all of them backup their data. However despite this their techniques were flawed. 16 per cent of companies store backup media on site only, which is contrary to best practice. More than a quarter of the companies rely on just one person (which I have found to be the most junior) to be responsible for the task. This reminds me of the story of Anybody, Somebody and Nobody – Anybody could have done it, Somebody should have done it, but Nobody ended up doing it!
Almost 40% of companies had encountered problems restoring their data to verify it works while 31% said they had never done so. By my calculation that only leaves 29% who have had no problems with recovering data!
A comment from the data protection commissioner Billy Hawkes was notable:
“A backup system is an essential means of recovering from the loss or destruction of data and therefore vital to public confidence in the administration of an organisations databases”
Under the Data Protection Acts of 1988 and 2003 (PDF File) any company storing personal data (which includes most companies) are obliged to take appropriate measures to prevent unauthorised destruction or deletion of that data.
Here in C Infinity we have solutions for single laptops or desktops as well as enterprise level solutions for large server backup. Our products have >99.999% recovery of data over billions of files and all data is encrypted prior to storage in the top data centre in Ireland. In addition we have a solution which allows for remote data deletion to prevent embarrassing data losses in the event of a laptop being stolen.
